Head and Neck Cancers
Overview
Head and neck cancers are a group of cancers that develop in the mouth, throat, larynx (voice box), lips, nose and nasal cavity, sinuses, and salivary glands. Most head and neck cancers are squamous cell carcinomas, which begin in the thin, flat cells that line many of these structures.
Treatment depends on the type, stage, and location of the tumor. Because these cancers can affect essential functions such as speaking, swallowing, and breathing, preserving daily function and quality of life is a key part of the treatment process.
At Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center, our multidisciplinary team provides comprehensive care using advanced therapies and specialized supportive services, including speech and swallowing therapy, reconstructive surgery, and rehabilitation. Together, we develop personalized treatment plans designed to achieve the best possible outcomes while helping patients maintain the functions that matter most.
