Blood Cancers

Overview

Blood cancers (hematologic cancers) can be diagnosed in children, teens, and adults. These cancers occur when abnormal blood cells begin to grow out of control. They may start in the bone marrow or the lymphatic system, and depending on the type, some grow quickly while others develop more slowly.

Blood cancers are generally grouped into three main categories: leukemia, lymphoma, and myeloma. Leukemia and myeloma begin in the blood itself or in the bone marrow, where new blood cells are made. Lymphoma affects the lymphatic system, which includes the lymph nodes, spleen, and thymus, organs that help the body fight infection.

At Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center, our multidisciplinary team provides comprehensive care for patients with blood cancers. We combine advanced diagnostic testing, innovative treatment approaches, stem cell transplantation expertise, and access to clinical trials to develop personalized treatment plans tailored to each patient's diagnosis and needs.
