Lung Cancers

Overview

Lung cancer includes two main types: non-small cell lung cancer and small cell lung cancer. It is the third most common cancer in the United States and can affect anyone. While smoking causes most lung cancers, nonsmokers can also develop the disease. Lung cancer can spread from one lung to the other, and cancers that originate elsewhere in the body may also spread to the lungs. Treatments depend on the type and stage of the disease.

Other cancers that may start in or around the lungs include lymphomas, pleural mesothelioma, and sarcomas. These cancers are generally not classified as lung cancer and often require different treatment approaches. For more information about these cancer types, visit our pages on Blood Cancers and Sarcomas.
